Inside this Book – I want to make something very clear. Illness is real. Accidents happen. Medicine can help. I am not writing this book in order to convince you that the sole reason for your illness is in your mind and that you must have done something wrong or are to blame for being ill. And I am not saying that simply by understanding how the mind and body work together you will be able to miraculously cure yourself of whatever ails you. What I am saying is that the role of the mind and emotions in your state of health is a vital one. It is only a part of the overall picture, but it is the part that is invariably overlooked. By understanding this relationship you can understand yourself more deeply and can claim a greater role in your own well-being. I remember having an upset stomach when I was a child and my grandmother asking me if I was having a problem at school. What she knew instinctively we are at last beginning to prove scientifically: that there is an intimate and dynamic relationship between what is going on in your life, with your feelings and thoughts, and what happens in your body. Recently, a Time magazine special showed that happiness, hopefulness, optimism, and contentment “appear to reduce the risk or limit the severity of cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, diabetes, hypertension, colds, and upper- respiratory infections.” At the same time, according to this article, “depression—the extreme opposite of happiness—can worsen heart disease, diabetes, and a host of other illnesses.”
Inside this book –Your Body Speaks Your Mind PDF Book by Debbie Shapiro – The actual shape of your body can say a great deal about you. Although much of this may be inherited, there are characteristics that accompany specific shapes and postures. Just like a woodsman can read the history of a tree, a good bodymind therapist can read a person’s life history through the formation and shape of the body structure, the places that are being held, its ability to move freely or where it is constricted, and the areas of tension. Your body is like a walking autobiography, muscle and flesh formations reflecting your experiences, injuries, worries, and attitudes. Whether you have a timid posture, one that is bowed over and constricted, or one that is standing square and defensive, all are learned early in life and become built into your very structure. Try taking a good long look in the mirror—naked! Are you standing straight and upright, or are you bent over or lopsided? If so, were you taught not to be straight with people? How does it feel to straighten up? Which side of your body is most dominant? Is your head held high or slightly to one side, as if to avoid a confrontation? Can you meet the world head on? What happens when you move your neck? Are you stiff and unbending or do you move with fluidity and ease? Do your joints move freely? Look at the way you hold your muscles or joints.
