Reviews of : Uncertainty in Games by Greg Costikyan PDF Book
Inside this Book – This is basically a game designer talking about games he likes. The idea is supposedly that uncertainty is what makes games fun, and so Mr. Costikyan writes a taxonomy of uncertainty in games. He never sells me on why this is useful, or how this can be used to make better games. His framework has inconsistencies. For example, he differentiates between “puzzles” and “games” by saying that puzzles have a fixed solution. Then when he realizes that many games (like Monkey Island) also have fixed solutions, he just handwaves it away. Also, by the end of the book almost everything to do with games or game culture gets stuck into some branch of uncertainty.
Inside this book –Uncertainty in Games PDF Book by Greg Costikyan – A more depth in look into why some games keep us more interested than others. Uncertainty is not a word we use in our vocabulary often. We would never wake up in the morning and hope a never ending unfortunate events that break our routine flow, nor if they occur we would react in an optimistic way of overcoming such challenge. In contrast, most of our days, we anticipate and prepare for the worst to happen. We mitigate and manage the risk, especially if failing so affects our own survival. We make our life plain and dull, for although it would be exciting to explore new challenges to face, the risk of failing is more costly than the rewards it entails.
