Inside this Book – I LOVE TURNING INVISIBLE . I T ’ S A DEFINITE PERK AS AN INVESTIGATIVE journalist. I mean, it’s part of the reason I am an investigative journalist; it’s a chicken-egg thing. Being naked to get invisible? That part? Don’t love that so much. Right now, for example, I’m freezing my lady bits off in the closet of a swanky hotel suite waiting for a break in the story that’s been driving me for the last four years. Four. Years. Of creeping around LA in only what-God- gave-me to bring down one man. The reason I’ve transformed from caterpillar Maggie May to the butterfly of revenge Miss Mayday, whistle-blower on the biggest scumbags in Hollywood. As if on cue, Marty Zebulund strides into the suite. He lowers himself onto a blue velvet couch and runs his hand over the back like he owns it. The room is upscale and modern with a large arrangement of costly-looking flowers, about the size of a Fiat, sitting on the table in the foyer. Flowers that will be thrown in the trash at the first sign of aging. If that isn’t a metaphor for this town, then I don’t know what is. I’m trying not to shiver in the coat closet watching through the crack in the partially opened door. I lose my battle when the sight of him through the flowers makes me shudder.
Inside this book –The Unseen PDF Book by Piper Sheldon – EMOTIONS PLAY OVER MY FACE AS WE RIDE ALONG IN THE BACK OF THE limousine, despite my effort to remain impassive. Mrs. Jenkins, Rhonda, as she prefers for me to call her, presses all the buttons and has two glasses of champagne very quickly. Soon her attention turns to me. I recall Maggie’s comments and shift away. “So. You like my Maggie?” she asks. “Yes.” My focus remains on the passing apartment buildings. Regardless, her gaze bores into the side of my face. “Hmmm. Okay. But she’s special. Don’t think she’s the type to boink and be tossed aside.” “I wouldn’t—” I clear my throat. “Maggie and I aren’t like that.” “Sure. Sure.” “Really, she’s not interested in me. Like that.” I think of the kiss we shared. Innocent and yet incendiary. I don’t even believe my own lies. “That’s a huge load of cock-and-bull. You two almost set my curtains on fire with your heated glances. But okay, do your little song and dance.” My bow tie catches on my Adam’s apple until I wiggle some slack into it. Should I explain that I need to take it slow with Maggie? At some point it stopped being a question of “if” with Maggie, now it’s only “when?” When will she let me in? “She’s been hurt.” Mrs. J. finishes before I formulate a response. Her tone’s a little more somber. “She doesn’t share much, but I’ve seen enough to know. Poor little thing has been knocked out all her life.
