Inside this Book – The essential character of money power for most manual workers is that it comes to them not individually, but collectively, through union action. When a labor negotiator sits down to draft a new contract, he does not say to the management that Jones or Smith has done a particularly good job last year, and deserves a raise, he says that X category of labor is worth so much more this year, or that men with X number of years of service are due for a longevity raise, or that X group of workers need a cost-of-living escalator clause. The labor negotiator is fighting for categories of work to be rewarded, not for individuals to be singled out. Yet the code of respect running through all these people’s lives demands that a man “make something of himself,” that he justify his material gains by a personal effort. In collective bargaining he is rewarded, if at all, for belonging to a category. Carl’s and the pipe fitter’s wages have gone up in the last five years, as have their fringe benefits; yet both feel frozen, unable to control their own lives. And it is for this reason that the pipe fitter makes a distinction between himself and Mr. Arnold: the pipe fitter may make more money, but it is Mr. Arnold whose class position appears to hinge on a power inside the man himself.
Inside this book –The Hidden Injuries of Class PDF Book by Richard Sennett – His humiliation-that is a part of his strictness, but so also is a revulsion at the gulf between classes. His kids will treat all men with dignity: “If this is a world where you have a rat race, let it be. But at least my kids is going to be the way I want them.” But don’t those who refuse to join the rat race lose, aren’t they beaten down by the more aggressive? This thought too has occurred to him, and there is a fear in Ricca that in making his kids humane he might also be condemning them to remain in his station. It is difficult for RiccaKartides, even as he creates some measure of material security in his life, to feel that his quantitative gains translate into the emotional sense of independence and assuredness he wants from these material improvements. He sees himself as receiving the ultimate form of contempt from those who stand above him in society: he is a function, “Ricca the janitor,” he is a part of the woodwork, even though he makes $10,000 a year, owns a home, drives a car, and has some money in the bank for his children’s education. He feels vulnerable and inadequately armed, but what has he done wrong? These are the feelings working-class life in America arouses in an outsider.
