Inside this Book – In this edition of “The Dead Alive”, things really get going when the story ends. After you finish the last page of Wilkie Collin’s 1874 novella about a man sentenced to death for the murder of a person who’s still alive, Rob Warden, Executive Director of the Center on Wrongful Convictions, serves up some really interesting historical and social commentary. First, Warden explains the true story of the two Vermont farmers that Collins’s plot is based on, which is just as interesting as Collin’s fictionalized version. There’s a copy of the real “murderer’s” coerced confession to the murder he didn’t commit, and then Warden summarizes all of the United States’ known “dead alive” cases–situations in which a “murder victim” has turned up in perfect health after their “murderer” has been convicted. Warden wraps things up with a list of all of the persons sentenced to death in the U.S. who have later been exonerated.
Inside this book –The Dead Alive PDF Book by Wilkie Collins – This was an interesting read. It’s based on an infamous case in Vermont that took place in the mid nineteenth century. I didn’t feel it was as good as some of his other stories, perhaps because the balance is off. There is more time spent setting up the characters than on the mystery, and for me, at least, there was no suspense. Although that may be because I had read the case history before reading the book, and knew how it would turn out.
