Reviews of : How Games Move Us by Katherine Isbister PDF Book
Inside this Book – This text is a good entry point towards the larger conversation over how gamers can be attached emotionally and socially to the video games they play, and what motivates us to further deepen the emotional connectivity to them. I enjoy the challenge Isbister used in steering away from the Triple-A games, but my inner selfishness wished she incorporated maybe one example in the text on how a game like Bioshock can affect emotion. Her analysis of the mega indie game, “Journey” was great and I very much so enjoyed reading it; definitely makes me want to replay that game and enjoy the Journey (pun fully intended). Lastly, the analysis throughout “Social Play: Designing for Multiplayer Emotion” was the best part of the text. Here, she discusses the effectiveness of being able to share emotional and social experiences through online play with a variety of games that extended beyond regular Call of Duty/other shoot ’em up games.
Inside this book –How Games Move Us PDF Book by Katherine Isbister – I will echo another reviewer by commenting that it unclear for what audience this book is intended. The author largely describes simple conceptual games developed as research projects by game design students, which practically no one will have ever played or heard of. Sure, they can highlight the specific point that the researchers intended to bring to the fore when conceiving the game, but without any attempt to draw parallels between critically acclaimed or commercially successful titles, what’s the point in drawing our attention exclusively to such niche cases? Any analysis the author draws from these case studies has all the depth of an undergraduate term paper.
