As usual, there is an original and relevant plot with original characters. This one is especially strong on character, with the surprising stand-out being Amena, the thirteen-year-old girl after whom the book is named. A Syrian refugee in Europe, she witnesses the murder of her family after stealing a cell phone from a Syrian spy that contains instructions on where to pick up a a North Korean chemical weapon. From there, the plot gets rather complicated, but Amena’s path eventually intersects with Pike Logan’s team. The interactions between Pike and Jennifer and Amena are genuinely touching and funny, and Taylor creates a good deal of tension over what will become of the young girl. Throw in a lethal Russian MMA terminator assassin, a flaky CIA officer, a jihadist cell, a North Korean black ops team, and the threat of an impending chemical weapon attack, and this solid thriller shows why Brad Taylor is an absolute pro.
