Inside this Book – Here the divisor is first arranged, like the dividend, ac- cording to descending powers of x. The first term of the quotient 2x^ is obtained by dividing 605^, the leading term of the dividend, by ‘dx, the leading term of the divisor. The product of the divisor 3«+2 and 2x’^, which is 6a5^+4a5^, is then subtracted from the dividend, giving — Qx’^— 3£c+2, the first difference. The second term of the quotient —^x is obtained by dividing —9*^, the leading term of the first difference, by 3a5, the leading term of the divisor. The pro- duct of the divisor .ind —^x, which is — 9a5^— 605, is then subtracted from the first difference, giving 3x+2, the second difference.
